Christmas Day & Boxing Day Patrols
It is unfortunate but we have to do patrols on these days. We are always short on these days so if you can help out at any time on these days, please just turn up. The unlucky patrols to draw these days are as follows:
Christmas Day
Patrol 10, 8.00am - 11.30am
Patrol 14, 11.15am - 2.45pm
Patrol 18, 2.30pm - 6.00pm
Boxing Day
Patrol 11, 8.00am - 11.30am
Patrol 15, 11.15am - 2.45pm
Patrol 19, 2.30pm - 6.00pm
Any queries re patrols should be directed to David Fleeting, Manager Lifesaving or your patrol captain.Remember the same rules apply as last season. Miss too many patrols and you are out; arrange substitutes or let your patrol captain know if you can’t make it; the usual common courtesy.
There have been a number of members missing patrols without notification. You will get a nasty, unexpected New Year present unless you lift your game.
Education
1.
Proficiencies
All proficiencies are finished for the season unless by special arrangement.
Congratulations to the army of people that completed their Bronze and SRC awards in the week just gone. The water work from everyone was particularly outstanding and is a continuing testament to our club member’s abilities when working on a very tough beach. Big thanks go out to all of Bronte’s trainers and assessors for working towards such a great achievement. Special thanks to David’s Stone and Fleeting, for their efforts in getting all the SRC kids through.

Club Ball
Don’t forget the ball coming up next May. It will be a function to remember. The Deltones 50th year, great food and entertainment will be just some of the highlights. Organize your table of ten now. See Jim & Pat.
Club Access
At a Board meeting last night the following issues were resolved.
Effective immediately the boat shed area will be quarantined. The area is now out of bounds for nippers, cadets and junior members.
Reserve Active and Long Service members may be granted key access for their board storage as a transition arrangement.
Nippers, cadets and junior are to remove their gear from the board storage area by Sunday 23rd December 2007. Any gear remaining after this date will be removed.
The Board supports the idea of a future board storage area for responsible members in a location to be agreed.
From now access to the Club by Nippers is restricted to official training sessions and Sunday morning activities and/or unless accompanied by an adult.
Weekend security will be implemented to ensure these rules are enacted.
Building/Renovations Update
We are in the process of cleaning up the Club. Members are aware we are evolving a plan for the re-organization of the ground floor. The revised plan will be on exhibit at the Club for members’ to scrutinize and provide comment. All work is to be conducted during the off season.
We will be starting some essential work with regard to access. The beach side roller door is being replaced this week and will have a swing door adjacent to it. The roller door into the Nippers room is also being replaced this week.
We are isolating the back area to enable it to be reorganized, surplus and junk gear removed and the roller door replaced with swing doors early in the new year.
The back area is being quarantined for safety and security reasons while this work occurs and access will be via key. Those senior members identified as having board lockers will be given keys so they may access the area – junior, cadet and nipper members must stay out.
Please remove all gear now as access will be restricted from close of business Sunday. A new lock will be fitted Monday.
Competition
The following report was received from Peter Clemesha, the Club’s board riding co-ordinator.
Thanks to all the Bronte junior/senior boys and girls who competed at
Maroubra on Saturday...it was a great success with SLSA clubs from
Cronulla, Wanda, South Maroubra, Maroubra, Bronte and North Steyne
competing for the annual Quicksilver SLSA club trophy.
With over 60 board-riders from the various clubs, I can report that
Bronte was well represented with over 20 board-riders competing on the
day. We had great success and made the finals in both the junior and
seniorevents
The surf was very challenging with 6ft plus sets that really tested the
surf skills of the competitors
This event is proving very popular and shows how much strength and depth
there is not only at Bronte but other Sydney Clubs.
Sydney Branch and State will very competitive.
Thanks to George for arranging the surf comp, Tim Murray from Maroubra
surf club who was a great host and Kat from Quicksilver for the great
prizes and of course the parents who helped run the event.
Cheers
Peter
p.s. competition results and photos will be on the Bronte website soon.
Good stuff boardies, keep up the good results and we may see Bronte back up there on top with a few State and Aussie titles.
North Cronulla Carnival
The heavy dump at North Cronulla on Saturday that restricted events didn't deter the strong competition and local clubs were joined by many of the State’s best from up and down the coast. Highlights of the Carnival for Bronte included Ashleigh Bonds 2nd place in the Open women’s surf swim and 6th place for John McCarthy in the Open men’s surf race. Our young ladies in the U15 R&R, Milena Dambelli, Tess Cullen, Daisy Carter, Page Gibson and Kendall Miller coached by Amy Teagle came 2nd - a great result.
In the boat area we had two Reserve crews and one A crew competing. The stand out on the day was the re-formed State A crew Champions from 2004; Connor, Matt, Nigel and Campbell under new sweep Justin Taylor who looked very sharp in their first hit out after world travels. They made the Reserve Final. The next carnival is Queenscliff on the 5th January 2008.
Also dates and venues for this season’s board/ski/craft scrutineering (both seniors and juniors) are as follows:
19/1 Wanda Inter Cities 8am to 11am
2/2 Coogee Open 8am to 11am
16/2 Sth Maroubra Branch Age 7.30 to 10.30
17/2 Sth Maroubra Branch Open 7.30 to 10.30

At the Olympic Open Water Qualifying Event at Penrith Lakes, Bronte's Andrew Beato came second in the 5KM swim and has qualified for the World Championship in Europe in May. Andrew was part of our Australian Championships Surf Team that medalled in Perth and we wish him good luck at the Worlds.
Nipper News
Don’t forget this coming Sunday is a big day for Nippers. Santa arrives in the morning by boat so get the littlies down for this – its always a great spectacle.
Later in the evening (5.00pm) there is Carols in the Park. Bring your blanket, picnic and the bottle of cheer along with your best voice and sing along with all the favourites. It’s a great evening so don’t miss it. BBQ and soft drinks available.
There are approximately 800 Nipper parents in the club and, as mentioned in the newsletter, we are asking for 3-4 parents to volunteer on the social committee to help organise a couple of events. To date we have had 1 response (thank you Leonie). I know everyone thinks that someone else will do it all but this is not the case. If you can help please email Leanne Bartlett at HYPERLINK brontenippers@hotmail.com.
The Nippers are also running a raffle. Please help out as proceeds go to the purchase of State uniforms etc.
Don't Forget
Xmas Special - Nipper Boards RRP $169.00. Special Price $130.00. See Peta or Roley.
Club News
Just a quick note of thanks for the kind donations and also the support during the marathon rowing event by Dave Stone, and especially for the bucket of ice cold water over his head at the finish! Your support and encouragement was appreciated. Time was 3.06, a world record. All proceeds went to the Sydney Children’s Hospital. Well done Dave!
Jim Morrow had a surprise 70th birthday party last weekend. Jim’s ageless and looks very well – its amazing what good living does for you.
Peter Ambrose also has just celebrated a birthday. No Peter is not 70!
Word is out that the Club’s super caterer Chris Vavasour is packing up and heading for the sunny and rural location of Belligen near the mid North Coast. Chris and wife Penny will settle down to a more sedate lifestyle in the country.
Saw Bob Bray on the weekend. Looks in a lot of discomfort. Hang in Bob, things can only get better.
The “Wine Dot”, Bob Harper was visiting Sydney from the sunny areas of Cairns. Looks remarkably well.
Terry Woodward is back in hospital. A short stay is expected while he recuperates from pneumonia related problems.
A new surf boat, the Frank Norton was spectacularly christened 2 weeks ago by Bob “Zipper” Conlon and his A crew. Frank, who is almost 88 years young was delighted with the proceedings and a large crowd of well wishers turned up to help Frank celebrate. You will be pleased to hear that in a good sized surf of about 10-12 foot, Zipper didn’t shirk it and went out for two waves. The first one he cleaned up half the other surfers (board & body) in a lazy left slew, whilst the second wave was bigger that threatened to go straight but the lure of the reef was too much. The new Frank Norton nuzzled the rocks but was stopped from any major damage. Zipper was pleased, his crew was pleased, Frank was pleased, the crowd was pleased but the Committee was the most pleased. Zipper was heard mumbling later that it went off better than when the Robin Hood was christened.
The renovations and general sprucing up of the Club’s auditorium has resulted in huge crowds coming to the Club Sunday arvos to experience Bronte hospitality. The place is even very busy during the week with seminars, Christmas parties and general functions keeping our bar staff, caterers and caretaker/cleaner absolutely flat chat. Turps and Corey reckon seven days/nights a week is a bit much. Can’t help but feel a bit sorry for them. So on Sundays when they are both worn out from the previous seven days, understand if they don’t have the same happy carefree spirit they normally reserve especially for you.
The weather in Sydney has been pretty average the last few weeks. Humid, cloudy then sunny with huge thunder storms in the afternoon. What’s going on! Kevin promised us climate change (initiatives) – I hope he leaves Bali and comes to Bronte soon! That’s it for now.
That’s all for now. Have a Merry and Safe Christmas.
