Golf Day
A good day was had by all in hot and windy conditions.

Renovations - Bar Closed
The bar renovations are progressing on schedule. Sorry for inconvenience but a necessary improvement in facilities will be the result.

Please note the bar will not be operating for next weekend, i.e. 16th September. We are all very hopeful that it will be operational on the 23rd. As an alternative why not go to Bronte RSL and see its renovations. They are a sponsor and will welcome all members and friends of the Club. Or if you need a social tipple earlier why not visit the Splashers in the park around 11.30am. Please pass this information on to the regular Sunday visitors.

Education
1. Proficiencies
The following information refers to Bronze Medallion and ARC proficiency only. Information regarding proficiencies for SRF, Spinal Management, the Defib and Gold Medallion will follow.

This year there are a total of 8 times from 4 dates to choose in order for you to do your proficiency. Please choose 3 dates, email your choices in order of preference to bronte.instructor@gmail.com and wait (a few weeks) for confirmation of date and time.

The dates and times are:
Sunday 11 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 18 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 25 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 9 December 9am & 11am

Proficiencies will begin at the times written, any late comers will have to wait until the next time/date so please arrive 15mins early.

Signals and CPR will take place in the surf club before moving to the beach for the swim (200m run / 200m swim / 200m run in under 8min) and the board/tube rescue. The proficiency should take an hour to complete.

Anyone needing their ARC proficiency...these will take place in the surf club immediately after the 11am group has completed their water section. So, ARC holders, please choose your date accordingly.

These dates and times will be the only ones from Bronte this year. If you can not make these times, forget to turn up, believe the water to be too cold...then you are allowed to complete your proficiency at another beach but under your own reconnaissance.

Level 1 Officials Accreditation Course - SLSS Circular No 25 outlining information on the next Officials Course being held 17.11.07.

Nippers
The Nipper season got off to a flying start on Sunday the 14th. Leanne and the registration crew took over 200 U6 & U7 registrations. It was a fantastic effort by all involved. We now have approximately 500 kids registered for Nippers this season. The U8-U10s started at 9am in what could only be described as perfect conditions. Just what the doctor ordered. The older kids kicked off at their new start time of 10am. Hopefully the new start times will give all the groups a fair go at the limited real estate we possess.

We are trialing over the next couple of weeks a new thing with the boards this year. We are only going to use soft boards. The reasons behind this stem from different levels of competency in the board skill level. Last year there was carnage on the bigger surf days to child & craft. Kids will still be able to access all the fiberglass boards on one of the many training days in the training schedule. Speaking of training, Lindsay is in full swing with all the training. Please go to the web site under nippers to see all the various amounts of different training ALL the kids can participate in.

Joggers/Walkers
Results for Sunday 14th October

Todays's Fastest Run Man: Troy Quinlan Time 14.59min Lady: Helen Bours Time 20.43min

Walk 1st and fastest: Colleen O'Neill, Time 26.44min, 2nd Bob Scott, 3rd Keith McDonald

Competition
A number of events have been held lately.

  • At the Coolangatta Gold event last Sunday John McCarthy came a very credible 3rd in the U/19 event. Considering the race goes for about 5 hours John must be fit, healthy and ready to go in the carnivals coming up. Great work John.
  • The Boaties were in the action last weekend as well. In the "River Run" from Picnic Point to Tom Uglies Bridge, Zipper Conlon's crew got 5th with only 50 seconds separating 1st from 5th. Simon Paterson's B crew got 2nd - great result. All pretty impressive stuff from the Boaties.

Endurance Carnival at Collaroy

A Carroll - 1st board & ironman in 30-39 division
John Mccarthy - 1st U/19 surf race, 3rd u/19 ironman, 2nd u/19 ski
Troy Quinlan - 3rd u/19, 5 kilometre run
Ashleigh Bond - 2nd open womens surf race
Coleen O'Neill - 1st o/50 womens surf race
Siobhan Mccarthy - 2nd open womens 5 kilometre beach run.

Bronte came 3rd in overall points score.

27 Years of Woman in Surf Life Saving Cocktail Party
Bronte SLSC would like to invite all it's members and other branches to a celebration of 27 Years of Women in Surf Life Saving Cocktail Party - proposed dates are November Wednesday 14th (flyer to come out shortly) - 6:30pm for a 7pm kick off to 8pm.

We are delighted to announce that H. G. Nelson has kindly offered to be our MC on the night and we will have some special guests - women who joined the club 27 years ago share a story with everyone - we are also hoping to have the President of Surf Lifesaving Australia also attend. Finger food and open bar provided on the night.

We are seeking sponsors for the night, as we would like to make this an annual event to congratulate and celebrate women in surf lifesaving and as sponsors we would be wanting to offer scholarships to various sporting organisations for young women who show promise within the club. Any members who can assist with sponsorship of this event or who work for organisations who may be interested, can you please contact - Coleen O'Neill - Manager, Marketing Bronte SLSC coleen@oandprecruitment.com or 0404-888-791.

Club News

  • The Golf day was held last month in hot and windy conditions at Randwick Golf Club. Sorry about misunderstanding with some people but the idea is to just go out to the course and be put into groups and play. Nothing special but good fun. By the way, the winners of Richard, Dean, Gary and Col will not be playing off the same handicaps as this year. Single figures come to mind.
  • Thanks to Coleen O'Neill for her organization re the bar re-opening. Big crowd and plenty of fancy dress. It was great to see so many families and yes,the kids were all well behaved. If the crowds continue we may have to expand some more!
  • The sound system is now back and operational - last Sunday a slight glitch due to renovations but the installers were back down and putting the correct wires into the correct holes.
  • Yes I know we should have had the kiosk security grills painted in winter and I know I should have been more on the ball and I know it has be inconvenient having the kiosk operating on a restricted basis but the good news is it will be finalized by weekend.
  • The Bondi to Bronte Ocean Swim is coming up in December so start training.
  • A Club Ball is scheduled for May next year at the AJC with the Deltones. Start saving your pennies, it will be good.
  • Bob Zipper Conlon is getting married again at the end of the month. Bob is marrying the lovely Jenny. I think she should be warned about Bob as this is his third crack at the marriage stakes. Three times proves it is what they say. Congratulations to both Bob and Jenny.
  • Plenty of people are getting old around the Club. Alex Menzies turned a very young 70 a few weeks back and his neighbour Merv Gladstone turned a remarkably young 78 last week. Past member Barry Goodrich reached 60 last Friday. Who's next?
  • The Board lockers are being vandalized again. The kiosk storage area is being vandalized again. The back area is being abused and new Nipper boards just purchased for a lot of money were trashed last week. It must be school holidays. However something must be done and the Board of management is considering some pretty severe and stringent measures to stop this stupidity.
  • The roller door is being repaired as I write this. Yes it has been inconvenient but it will be replaced soon due to building regulations etc and hopefully the makeshift repairs will hold up for a few months.
  • The surf race is on in earnest now and with the water warming up more starters are beginning to appear. Don't forget that it starts at 10.30am sharp. Barry will not wait and we again have some great prizes thanks to Life Member Paul Johnson and Snowy Hydro.
  • Finally for all of us who have friends who live in New Zealand or who reside close to you, make sure you remind them the Rugby World Cup final is on this Saturday night and they aren't in it. Forget the jibes that neither is Australia because the wobbly wallabies were never expected to make it.
  • One last point - the centenary ball for SLS is on tomorrow night. As a foundation club - what am I saying - as the first Club, Bronte will have a table and Patron Frank Norton is a special guest of Jon Donohoe. Thanks Jon and I'm sure all will have a great time.

Please send me any news as I can only make up so much. That's all for now. I'm sure I have missed a lot but perhaps next time.
