Newsletter no.3

14th September 2007

Fees and Tags
All fees are now overdue. Your tag will be disconnected as of next week. Also there seems to be confusion re tag identification. There is a 3 digit code applicable to each tag. If you don't have that code and I can't identify a tag to a particular individual the tag will be disconnected. I realize that it is an inconvenience but the only way it can be corrected is if you come to the office and the tag is swiped and then identified to you. The office will be operating from next weekend onwards in the mornings.

Golf Day
Thank you for your response. It now looks like we will have some 35-40 starters which will make it a great day. Its not too late to get your name down. It is scheduled for Friday 28th September 2007 at Randwick Golf Club. Hit off will be from 8.00am. Cost will be approximately $35 which will give you a round of golf, a complimentary drink from the bar and a few drinks during the game from our social drink cart.

Ski Weekend
Last month a group of 31 Nippers, Juniors and parents went to the snow for what proved to be a great weekend. Peter Clemesha and Coleen O'Neill organized the trip which involved traveling down by bus, staying a few nights and of course skiing. I am reliably informed that while no injuries occurred on the snow, there were a few walking wounded on the Sunday morning after the night before.

Conditions were great with good snow and sunny weather and all had a great time. Peter & Coleen will, I'm sure, be easily convinced to organize another trip same time next year so start practicing your aprs ski techniques. A big thank you to Janna Hudson our Travel consultant for persevering with all the changes relating to this trip. Also thanks to the parents who came on the trip to supervise the kids - Brian Quinlan, Carrie & Pat Keating Follas, Sally Basset & Tom Jones and Dave Teagle.

However thanks mainly to Coleen & Peter for initiating and organizing a trip that everyone really had a great time. As a quick aside, there are several photos of the trip which are posted on the Club's web site.

Renovations - Bar Closed
The bar renovations are progressing on schedule. Sorry for inconvenience but a necessary improvement in facilities will be the result. Please note the bar will not be operating for next weekend, i.e. 16th September. We are all very hopeful that it will be operational on the 23rd.

As an alternative why not go to Bronte RSL and see its renovations. They are a sponsor and will welcome all members and friends of the Club. Or if you need a social tipple earlier why not visit the Splashers in the park around 11.30am. Please pass this information on to the regular Sunday visitors.

Training
1. Proficiencies
The following information refers to Bronze Medallion and ARC proficiency only. Information regarding proficiencies for SRF, Spinal Management, the Defib and Gold Medallion will follow.

This year there are a total of 9 times from 5 dates to choose in order for you to do your proficiency. Please choose 3 dates, email your choices in order of preference to bronte.instructor@gmail.com and wait (a few weeks) for confirmation of date and time.

The dates and times are:

Sunday 7 October 10am
Sunday 11 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 18 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 25 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 9 December 9am & 11am

Proficiencies will begin at the times written, any late comers will have to wait until the next time/date so please arrive 15mins early.

Signals and CPR will take place in the surf club before moving to the beach for the swim (200m run / 200m swim / 200m run in under 8min) and the board/tube rescue. The proficiency should take an hour to complete.

Anyone needing their ARC proficiency...these will take place in the surf club immediately after the 11am group has completed their water section. For those choosing the October proficiency option, this means ARC proficiency will take place after the only water section of that day. So, ARC holders, please choose your date accordingly. These dates and times will be the only ones from Bronte this year. If you can not make these times, forget to turn up, believe the water to be too cold...then you are allowed to complete your proficiency at another beach but under your own reconnaissance.

2. Bronze Medallion
New Bronze Medallion groups are about to start up in the first week of October. If anyone knows of friends/relatives who wish to join the club, then please have them contact Callum Metcalfe at bronte.instructor@gmail.com

    Club News

  • Re: the celebration for the 25 years of women in surf lifesaving - Coleen O'Neill is organizing this special event and currently waiting to get a confirmed date from HG as he said he would if possible MC it. It would be great to have it during the centenary week celebrations of Surf Lifesaving which is 18th October - but then again this may be too soon. So it will possibly have to be mid November.
  • Coleen O'Neill is certainly going to be busy this season. She is also organizing a family fun day for fun and to raise funds for competition It's format will be the old traditional fun events ie. Sack races, egg and spoon races, three legged races etc. - cost per family is $20.00 to enter as many events as you like and there will be great prizes. A date has to be set so it will fall in line with Nipper and Club calendar events but watch this space.
  • The Deltones 50th Anniversary Club ball will be held in May 2008 at the AJC Centre at Randwick. I know it's a long way off but start saving your pennies for what will again prove to be a great night.
  • The East Coast Ocean Challenge will be held on Sunday September 30th at Bondi Beach and we are looking for volunteers to fill some very important roles.

    The job roles are:
    > 5 Radio officers.
    > 1 First Aid officer with: Senior First Aid, Defibrillation, Advanced Resuscitation and Spinal management certificates.
    > 5 Registration assistants

The event registrations start at 7am and finish 8:30am at Bondi Surf Club. For details please contact Stephen Ford on 0417 470 529.

  • Simon Paterson's efforts last Sunday to entertain the wives of the great at Bondi almost caused an international incident. Seeing the sweep fall out, then the IRB miss picking him up twice, followed by the Bronte boat, without sweep, rolling over, was only marginally eclipsed by the police on jet ski's showing why they should stay on flat water - as one of them fell off. Call in the navy! Martin Green, the Club's erstwhile Professor of everything re solar power has done it again.
  • Members will have noted that the Club has gone solar. We have solar hot water and some solar panels on the roof courtesy of the Business Council of Australia, BP Solar and yes Martin did have an input. Thanks to all involved. You may be interested that the system has so far generated 128.4 kWhr, saved 135.4 kg of CO2 and will save the Club money.

    House Rules
House rules are being prepared and will be displayed in a few weeks time. There is no good bitching about them; we are a licensed club and the appropriate rules apply to us the same as any licensed venue. They will be enforced and duty managers will be appointed.

That's all for now. See you on the beach.
