Coogee Carnival -
Bronte had a great roll up for the Coogee Carnival last Saturday which was the combined Open Carnival and the Sydney Branch Masters Championships.
Our R&R ladies went well, we had 2 boat crews our senior surf team and it was great to see the new crop of cadets competing. There were competitors from the North and South Coast as well as the Northern Beaches.
Our ladies in the R&R continued their good form.
The U/19 R&R team with Amy & Stephanie Teagle, Madeline Apps, Eliza O’Grady & Caitlin Neisson took 2nd place while our open women’s team (Danielle Carter, Simone McDermid, Alana Wilson, Gemma Ainsworth & Madeline Apps) got 3rd. We had 2 U15 Teams also competing with Amy Teagles Team coming 3rd and Col McDermid's Team 5th.
Our Cadet Surf Team had a lot of fun and competed well. The Team comprised of Sam Fleeting, Mitch Keating-Follas, Kurt Dillon, Jack Radley, Jack Wilson, Jack McCarthy and Emma Dunne. The U15 Taplin team comprising Mitch, Sam, Kurt and Jack Radley finished 2nd. Mitch & Sam also finished second in the board rescue final.
Individually Mitch was 4th in the board and 7th in the swim. Sam was 4th in the Iron-man and 5th in the swim; Emma finished well up in the surf swim.
The senior team also had good success with Asheigh Bond winning the Open Iron-woman and also getting second in the open swim and 3rd in the board. John McCarthy won the U/19 Board and was 2nd in the Ski. Julia Tyrrell who is really going well on the ski finished 4th in the U/19 women’s ski and came 5th in the board.
Our open men’s Ski Team came a close 3rd with new paddler Chris Kilmurray going extremely well along with Tom Woodriff and Bruce Hopkins. They also all made the Ski Final in a hot field with Tom a close 3rd.
Whilst the open section was operating the Masters were also competing in the Sydney Branch Masters Championships.
The competition was strong and the stand out individually was Fiona Botella with 1st place in the swim and board. Coleen O'Neil who is training hard took 2nd in the swim and 3rd in the board and Helen Bouris was 3rd in her board and swim race. The boys were not to be outdone and Harries was on fire with two individual golds in the Ski and Iron-man and 2nd in the Ski and Board as well as teaming up with JJ and Teddy Clifford to win another gold in the board relay. JJ tried hard all day to equal Fiona's golds after taking 3rd in the swim and board and was happy with the board relay result. Along with Dave Stewart who picked up 2nd in the swim, JJ and Teddy teamed up in their Taplin for a close 2nd result. Teddy as usual needed an additional carry bag to take his medals home with 1st place in the ski and iron-man and second in the swim and board and was putting pressure on GF to be considered for a place on the senior taplin team.

Club News
• Some great news which came out on Australia day. Long service member Jon Donohoe was “gonged” and received the Order of Australia (AM) for services to surf life saving. Jon who has won many Australian Surf Life saving open surf championships received this recognition for his services to SLS Australia and of course his great work in chairing the rescue helicopter service which he chaired until recently. Well done Jon and congratulations from everyone at Bronte.
• Peter Miller is well and receiving visitors. Thanks to all from the Club who have visited Peter and kept his spirits up. Get well soon Pete – see you at Bronte soon.
• The new IRB will be launched in 2 weeks. Thanks to the Millett family for their generosity in donating the necessary funds. It will be christened on Sunday week – Sunday 24th February at the Club social. What better way to wet its head/bow.
• Some bad news in that life member Bill Singleton is not well. Bill has given his all to surf life saving having won an Aussie gold in the boats, been President of Branch, is the current Patron of the Branch and a Bronte member through and through. Hang in there Bill; we are all with you.
• The boat section is under-going some re-jigging in that a boat advisory panel has been formed to take the burden of this section from one person. It’s a huge task and not fair for any one person to be responsible. This advisory panel will be responsible for the planning, crewing, driving efficiencies etc. Panel members are Simon paterson, Bob Conlon, Dean Grimshaw, & Jon Ward.
The sub committee formed to determine a suitable board storage area has determined a solution to be put to the Board next meeting. Thanks to all who submitted ideas.
• Life member Barry Brignell is a grand-father again. Daughter Amanda produced a sister for brother Guthrie. The Brignells are expanding - congratulations extended to all the Brignells.
• Life Member Dennis Milne is back home after 6 weeks in Switzerland. Welcome back Tojo.
• Of the young blokes in the Club keep an eye on young Mitch Winters. Word is he’s not too shabby with his footy. One to watch in the future.
