Remember the same rules apply as last season. Miss too many patrols and you are out; arrange substitutes or let your patrol captain know if you can’t make it; the usual common courtesy.

Education/Proficiencies
An IRB crewing course is to be held soon depending on interest. If interested please contact David Jones or Sam Wilson who will be running the course. If that fails contact the office and I will pass on.

Bob Woodger Memorial Carnival and Spreading of Ashes
The Woodger family along with Bronte SLSC invites R&R teams to take part in an event to honour Bob Woodger.

Date: Sat 15th of March
Where: Bronte Beach
Time: 9am – R&R dry run-throughs commence
Midday – spreading of Bobs ashes

R&R trophies will be awarded from the R&R NSW panel.

Finger food will be provided and drinks will be available at the bar in the surf club. So come and join us for a session of R&R in the lead up to Aussies and to celebrate the life of Bob Woodger.

Not all members may have known Bob but he certainly was the leader of our R & R section at Bronte Surf Club for at least the last 11 years.

This carnival is being organised by the N.S.W. R. & R Panel for Surf Life Saving, as a tribute to Bob and his family for all his hard as a State and National Official.  His service is going to be recognised by the National Panel of R & R at this years Australian Championships.  The carnival is also a means to demonstrate to the community the old form of rescue and resuscitation. It is also an opportunity for clubs travelling to the Aussies to have a last work out in front of some of the National Judges. The R & R Panel are also going to hand out their annual trophies to the award teams from the N.S.W. State Titles.

It would be appreciated if there could be club members present for any part of the day, but particularly during the spreading of the ashes.

All queries to Col McDermid on mobile  0411 135 927.

Club Ball
Don’t forget the ball coming up – the date is Saturday 31st May at the Randwick AJC (that’s the racecourse for you non-horsey types). It will be a function to remember.

Dress is black tie so the sheilas can really get dolled up. The Deltones 50th year, great food and entertainment will be just some of the highlights. Tables are all but sold out so get moving. Organize your table of ten now. Also to those who have booked a table, please get your money in. See Jim & Pat.

This is going to be lengthy as we have to report branch and state for nipper and senior Club. Some great results across the board so here goes.

Nipper Branch Results -
The Bronte Nipper competed with distinction and all results are on the web site. However notable performances produced 35 medals with 11 gold, 9 silver and 15 bronze. Of particular note was the fact that Bronte won the all age relay comprising Sophie Stuart Jones, Lucas Anderson, Tanner Atkins, Max Hendrie, Lewis Radley, Will Patterson and Eddie Jones – great result.

Also Sam Fleeting produced some outstanding individual results winning the U/14 Ironman and U/14 Board race.

I would like to mention more individuals but the sheer bulk of success of the Bronte Nippers is just too large. Congratulations to all involved especially all age managers, Craig Bartlett and Lindsay Cotterill and of course the kids themselves.

Senior State Championships (report from Graham Ford) -
The State Championships held at Swansea Belmont last weekend provided some great results for Bronte.

Despite the lack of surf on the finals day, our team put in a great effort.
Our Ski Relay Team of Tom Woodriff, Chris Kilmurray and Bruce Hopkins made the final and narrowly missed a medal.

Chris backed up in the Open Ski and made the final coming 9th in a very hot field. Julia Tyrrell had a great paddle on the ski to take 4th in
The U19 final, and John McCarthy flew home to miss a medal in his final taking 6th place.

In the open surf swim Mal Allen had a fantastic swim, but was pipped out of the Gold by Allum of Cronulla to take 2nd and than Nathan Smith got ahead of Mal in the over 24 swim. Ashleigh Bond made the open ladies surf swim final and despite being out of the placings wasn't far off the pace.
Our under 15 ladies Hannah Griffin, Millie McGuiness, Pheobe and Olivia Miley-Dyer had a great swim to take 3rd place in the surf teams and Pheobe, Millie and Olivia also made the board relay final finishing a very credible 7th place.
In the Surf Board riding competition held the Sunday before, when there was a small surf and Pheobe won the U15 age group, which was a fantastic effort and Olivia came 2nd in the open women’s board. Harries narrowly missed a gold in the open men’s surf board final taking 2nd place and was 3rd in the Malibu.
In the 2km beach run Stef O'Grady had a great run, despite not being well coming 4th and Siobhan McCarthy also took 4th place in the open ladies beach run.

In the flag competition, Raz Gill made her first open final, taking 7th place, and also ran well in the open women’s sprint final.
Our open women’s R&R Team had mixed fortune narrowly missing the final , but special mention goes to Simone McDermid who swam in the belt for the first time, which was unbelievable and our own R&R coach Lynne Burke jumped into 2nd line.

In the boat area Simon's reserve crew narrowly missed the final 16, but John Wards Crew of Connor, Matt, Nigel and Campbell had a great carnival and missed the final by one spot coming 8th in the State which is a great result for them with Aussies only 3 weeks out.

Although the team struggled without any waves (it was like a lake) they achieved some outstanding results, and hopefully Scarborough Beach in WA will have a surf.

Nipper State Championships -
The Bronte Nippers again competed with distinction at Swansea Belmont in some trying conditions in pretty average weather.
Unfortunately I don’t have a full and detailed list of results by name but can report that Bronte obtained the following:

u/11boys Beach Relay - 3rd
u/12 boys beach relay - 2nd
u/13 boys flags - 3rd Will Patterson
u/14 boys board - 2nd Sam Fleeting
u/8 girls wade relay - 2nd
u/9 girls beach relay - 1st
u/11girls beach relay - 3rd
Mixed 5 person R&R - 2nd

Well done Bronte – you all competed with distinction and I’m sure had a lot if fun up Newcastle way.

Upcoming Carnivals -
Only one left (3rd – 6th April – Australian Championships, Perth) and it’s the one that counts. We are only sending a small team across – costs are very prohibitive to justify a large team. It’s still costing a bomb!

The container is coming on Tuesday 18th March and is being loaded that evening. It will be gone by 2pm the next day so what’s left out won’t be going. All competitors to be at Club at 6pm for loading.

Board Lockers
The Board of management has endorsed the recommendation by the sub-committee regarding the installation of board racks in the men’s change room. There will be sufficient space for approximately 28 boards. Designs for the racks are currently being investigated.

Important Dates
Junior Ocean Swim - Sunday 30th March
Sportsman’s Lunch - Friday 18th April
Anzac Day - Friday 25th April
Veterans Day Re-Union -Sunday 27th April
Annual General Meeting - Sunday 10th August (to be confirmed)

Club News

  • Some particularly pleasing news is the conferring of Life Membership of Surf Life Saving Australia on Bill Singleton. Bill is also a life member of Bronte SLSC, Elouera SLSC, Sydney Branch and Surf Life Saving NSW. Bill was also a member of the last Bronte A crew to win the Australian Open Surf Boat title back in 1952. What a legend he is. Gruff on the outside, yet mellow on the inside and always available for an encouraging word when things seem tough. Sadly Bill is terribly ill and is doing it a bit tough at the moment. Hang in Bill.
  • A few weeks back Martin Palfey completed a double crossing of the Rottnest Island Channel swim. It’s about 40 kilometres and took Martin 14 hours to complete. He was the 6th person to do it. Now that’s a surprise – who on earth would want to swim across to Rottnest in the first place, let alone turn around and go back. There are perfectly good ferries that do the trip in about 30 minutes each way. Martin, next time you are down the beach call into the office – I think we should talk.
  • Peter Miller is well and out of hospital. Talk about miracles – Peter was pretty crook but is all but 100%. He’s down the beach, giving cheek and looks bloody good. Good to see you up and about Pete and I’m sure you be back on that mal very shortly.
  • Club legend Frank Norton turned 88 a few weeks back. Frank looks good and is an inspiration to us all. Frank’s wife Gwen hasn’t been that flash and Frank does the shopping, washing and cooking. I’ve seen the results of Frank’s cooking – Gwen better get better soon.
  • Mine host John “Turps” Turner also had a birthday – John turned 61. He looks in great shape and still has an acid tongue for all the dopes who try and annoy him.
  • The Quinlan family is in the wars. Son Troy got washed the length and breadth of a north coast rock ledge while fishing and of course it got opened up like the fish he was trying to catch. The end result is that Troy has about 30 stitches in his thigh. A bit higher and he would have had a squeaky voice. That rock fishing is great stuff.
  • Like father like son. Not to by out done by his son, Brian (I can do anything better than my sons) Quinlan did an Evil Knievel on a motor bike and fell off whilst trying to kick start it. End result is a broken leg, although a certain member suggested he already has more plastic in him than a Coles supermarket, so he only needs to be re-moulded. Get well soon Brian.
  • Life member Alex Menzies is away up the coast with his son. I hope he doesn’t go fishing.
  • Club stalwart and boatie Simon Paterson has just been elected to the Board of Bronte RSL sub-branch. I understand he is has also been made Treasurer of this august body. Either the sub-branch is about to acquire a lot of new surf boats or undergo some more renovations. It beggars belief but there you have it. Watch this space for what I am sure will be regular updates. Seriously, good on you Simon for having a go and getting seriously involved with one of the Club’s great supporters.

Administrative Assistant
We welcome the appointment of Geri Ford to the position of Administrative Assistant. She was the successful applicant. Her duties will focus on Nipper registration as well as Club registration and data base management, award recordings and management for both Nipper and senior Club, patrol hour management. She will work part time including Sunday mornings. The BOM approved the appointment on the recommendation of the Chief operating Officer to whom she reports directly. The club president was not involved in any of the processes.
