Education
1. Proficiencies
The following information refers to Bronze Medallion and ARC proficiency only. Information regarding proficiencies for SRF, Spinal Management, the Defib and Gold Medallion will follow.

This year there are a total of 8 times from 4 dates to choose in order for you to do your proficiency. Please choose 3 dates, email your choices in order of preference to bronte.instructor@gmail.com and wait (a few weeks) for confirmation of date and time.

The dates and times are:
Sunday 11 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 18 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 25 November 9am & 11am
Sunday 9 December 9am & 11am

Proficiencies will begin at the times written, any late comers will have to wait until the next time/date so please arrive 15mins early.

Signals and CPR will take place in the surf club before moving to the beach for the swim (200m run / 200m swim / 200m run in under 8min) and the board/tube rescue. The proficiency should take an hour to complete.

Anyone needing their ARC proficiency...these will take place in the surf club immediately after the 11am group has completed their water section. So, ARC holders, please choose your date accordingly.

These dates and times will be the only ones from Bronte this year. If you can not make these times, forget to turn up, believe the water to be too cold...then you are allowed to complete your proficiency at another beach but under your own reconnaissance.

Level 1 Officials Accreditation Course - SLSS Circular No 25 outlining information on the next Officials Course being held 17.11.07.

2. Bronze Medallion
New Bronze Medallion groups are about to start up in the first week of October. If anyone knows of friends/relatives who wish to join the club, then please have them contact Callum Metcalfe at bronte.instructor@gmail.com

Branch has scheduled a few education Courses for November. They include:

  • Defib proficiency - need numbers asap. That means by this weekend or forget it.
  • Spinal Course & proficiency - regos close 19th November.
  • Trainers Course - regos close 21st November

As any changes to calendars are made, the website will be updated. Please check regularly.

Callum Metcalfe resigns
Members should also be aware that Callum Metcalfe, the Club's Manager Education has resigned from his position effective the end of November.

On behalf of all members and the Board I would like to extend to Callum our thanks for doing this onerous and thankless task for the past 3 years. This position, apart from being one of the most important in the Club, is difficult and requires someone with time, dedication and of course an excellent knowledge of surf life saving courses. Callum had all these and will be missed.

Thankfully Callum will remain with the Club and conduct patrols and train prospective bronze squads; he will probably enjoy his membership much more with the pressure off.

Competition
In a great piece of news, young cadet Milly McGuiness has achieved a great milestone in being selected as one of only two girls selected in the U/15 girls Sydney Branch Team. Milly will be competing for the Branch Team at the NSW Inter Branch Championships to be held on the 17th November.

Milly's selection did not come by chance. She has worked her proverbial backside off under the guidance of Club trainer "Harries" improving her board technique and getting her fitness to the level required to compete at this elite level. Well done Milly, you'll kill em at the Inter Branch.

Other competition news - the boaties competed at the Elouera craft carnival at the A crew got 5th in the final while the Bs just missed the finals but rowed well. A good swell was running and with extra surf technique I am informed the boaties will do well this season.

Also dates and venues for this season's board/ski/craft scrutineering (both seniors and juniors) are as follows:

10/11 Cronulla IMB Jnr Carnival 8am to 11am

15/12 Nth Cronulla Open Carnival 8am to 11am

19/1 Wanda Inter Cities 8am to 11am

2/2 Coogee Open 8am to 11am

16/2 Sth Maroubra Branch Age 7.30 to 10.30

17/2 Sth Maroubra Branch Open 7.30 to 10.30

Social News
Melbourne Cup Day - ring Brie Green but I think its booked out. Remember you can't get in at the door. It's a ticket only affair. Brie's number is 0420 373 686.

Coleen O'Neill has always been known as a bit of a party animal and she has been working to organize a number of events. These include:

  • November 18th - Family Fun Day. Payment needs to be in advance and only costs $20 per family for a great day of fun; payment can be made via the Club's on-line system or just bring $20 to the Club this weekend and give to Coleen. Visit the web site for further details.
  • November 21st - 27 Years of Women in Surf Life Saving. Come on sheilas, get into this one and drag your man along.
  • This is a novel idea. Coleen is suggesting we have a Monday on Sunday 25th November with prizes for the best Mo. Bob Tate will have to romp in. Its his signature!

Bondi To Bronte
This is scheduled for Sunday 2nd December. It is the Club's major fund raiser and is very important so we can raise funds for the Aussies etc. We need all the help, assistance and bodies to make this a successful day.

Therefore there is a meeting scheduled for Sunday 18th November at 11.30am after the surf race so we can sort out all the details etc and allocate jobs. PLEASE TURN UP.

Club News

  • Bob Zipper Conlon got married for the 3rd time last Sunday. Jenny the bride looked radiant. Even Zipper brushed up pretty good. Three times proves it etc etc. Lovely day, great reception, good company, very, very bad Monday.
  • Club has received good news. We have been successful in receiving a very large grant from the Federal Government via Malcolm Turnbull for the installation of a recycled water system for washing down gear and equipment. What a clean, green Club we are!
  • President Graham Ford is back from several weeks following the wobbly wallabies at the recent world cup. Looks fit and healthy. Now for his daughter Gerri's wedding in Fiji.
  • Recent birthdays - Bluey turned 65; Bob Tate turned 50. Both of them kept it very quiet..
  • Roland Pisani went to Hawaii recently (is he still there) for a holiday. Just to show what a "snag" he is, he re-did his wedding vows to the lovely Peggy with full on ceremony on Waikiki. He even sang the Hawaiian Wedding Song. What a guy; you bastard, how can we compete with that.
  • Life member Gus Reeves received some good and bad news. The good news is that the surgeon is not going to cut off his leg; the bad news is he is to undergo about his 10th operation for a new knee. Hope it works this time, good luck Gus.
  • It must be the season for knees. Life member Mick Clancy is also to get a new knee soon.
  • Nella Rainger, wife of ex secretary Neville is ill. Word is she has meningitis. Get well soon Nella.
  • The Club now has some far reaching influence within the police force. Ex member David Owens was recently made the NSW Deputy Police Commissioner.
  • A quick reminder - no u/18s in the gym unless under direct supervision by their club appointed coach.
  • You think the Club does it easy financially. Just received our public liability and capitation invoices which total about $22,000. Of course we also have to pay insurance to cover workers compensation, fire, theft etc etc etc.
  • Bob Tate has organized a function at Souths Juniors were he now works which may see the Club get some money. It's a Calcutta day re the Melbourne Cup where it costs us nothing but we could get a good horse and win heaps. I presume there are good horses around but they may have a slight cough. This Sunday at 4.30pm at the Juniors for a couple of hours.

That's all for now. Please send me any news as I can only make up so much.
