The
Big End of Town - 'Bill
Widerberg's new book'.
Bill Widerberg, Bronte member of over 50 years, has
written a book which is to hit the bookshops in mid-August.
It is a work of fiction on corporate intrigue and from the
precis looks like a good read. Bill who has first hand experience
of "The Big End of Town" has provided plenty of
insights in his books. Buy it, read it. You can even get
Bill to provide you with an autograph inside the cover provided
you bring it down the beach.

Bronte
Rugby 2005
September 2005
|
|
From an idea by Bob Conlon and
Ross Miles in the latter part of last summer it was decided
to field a team in "Subbies" to give the young blokes
something to do in winter. The team was eventually made up of
Bronte members with some extras coming in through other Clubs
including North Bondi, Bondi, Clovelly and even some ex Randwick
players.
The
team would have been pleased to finish in the top 5 in its first
season, anticipating a 5 team semi play-off. However expectations
were slightly set back when it was discovered that the semis
only included the top 4 teams. In what can only be described
as a piece of good fortune, the minor premiers, Claymore, were
thrown out of the competition for belting a linesman. Their
misfortune set the scene for what turned into a fairytale finish
for Bronte.
Bronte
"Savers" defeated Canterbury in the elimination semi
22-3, accounted for Killara-West Pymble 32-17 in the final and
gave an outstanding display of solid rugby coupled with some
outstanding attack to account for Manly who were premiers in
2003 and 2004.
The
Grand Final was played in good spirit with no major blues in
front of an estimated crowd of 600 parochial supporters from
both sides. Bronte has received nothing but praise and good
wishes from the various opposition sides and the rugby administration
of Subbies.
Thanks must go to not only the players but also Peter Hoggett
as coach and most importantly the teams sponsor Bob Tate of
the Clovelly Hotel. Without the support of Bob the team would
not have got off the ground. Bob and the Cloey paid for the
jumpers, insurance, ground hire, equipment and even the laundering
of the jumpers each week. In addition he put on food and drinks
for the boys several times during the season.
Anyone
wishing to view the Meldrum Cup should visit the saloon bar
of the Cloey where it is on display in the fish tank.

Kurrawa
Carnival
Race
Day - 17th-20th March 2005
|
| |
Our
Masters results were extraordinary with Gold Medal results for
Scott Thomson (Ironman and Surf Race), Gale Dundas (Board &
Ironwomen) and our Ski Relay Team - Bruce Hopkins, Ted Clifford
and Tom Woodriff and Bruce & Tom on the Double Ski.
We
had three R&R Teams competing and our U17 and open ladies
teams were unlucky to miss the finals (after 2 protests were
dismissed) and our U15 girls did well in their first Aussies.
In the Boats, our 'A' Crew and Reserves were competitive, but
missed out on the finals, being brought undone by Kurrawa's
heavy conditions. It
was a question of 'Lucks a Fortune' for the crews, and our State
Champion 'A' Crew were without it.
Our
Surf Team performed well with Brett Hooper making the surf final
and Bruce and Tom making it through to the Aussie final in the
Double Ski, which was an outstanding result on top of their
great Masters gold medals.
Our
Junior Competitors - Julia, Troy, John and David had a great
carnival, competing well over 4 days in team and individual
events.
On
the beach, Rebecca Irwin made it through to the Sprint final
(4th) and Scott Thomson won a bronze with Troy Quinlan a sliver
in the 2km beach run which was an excellent outcome especially
Troy who had been dogged by injury during the season.
In
Surf Board Riding, Bronte competed strongly and special mention
is made to Amy and Lisa who were at their first Aussies in the
U15 Womens surfboard.
Our
March Past Team narrowly missed the final for the first time
in 8 years, but the team members were more concerned about who
would report in to our march past team mentor, Patron Frank.
Our
joint competitors of the carnival were Bruce Hopkins and Top
Woodriff, which was announced at our Aussie dinner at North
Cliff Surf Club, which everyone enjoyed and it was good to catch
up with our QLD connections (Gus Reeves, Bob Rodgers and others).
Next
season will be the last Aussies at Kurrawa (after 10 years)
and we all look forward to the trip to Western Australia in
2007.

Championships at Umina Beach
Race
Day - 4/6th March 2005
|

In
a very competitive Final Bob had the crew firing and although
turning their can in 4th place, the Bronte boy's put in an amazing
effort to outrow the opposition and take out the event. For
Bronte it was the first A Crew State victory for 50 years and
the celebrations back at Bronte went on late into the evening.
Congratulations to Bob and the crew of Campbell, Connor, Nigel
& Matt who worked so hard this season and really deserved their
Gold Medal The Club performed very well at the Championships
with the Open Womens & U17 Womens R&R Teams winning 2nd places
in the Finals.
Congratulations particularly go to the young ladies and the
R&R Coaches, Bob Lynne, Simone & Meagan on their outstanding
season. The surf conditions did not suit our surf team who made
lots of finals without success, but our Surfboard riders went
well and were amongst the medals, particularly Anthony Carroll
who had a great weekend.

Branch Championship Carnival
Race
Day - 12th February 2005

Zipper's
Crew of Campbell, Conor, Nigel and Matt worked hard at the finish
when they hit dead water. Zipper and the boys along with Patto's
crew who made the Reserve's Semi Final enjoyed a few quite one's
at their sponsor's Hotel, the Palace and celebrated the first
Branch Championship for an A Crew at Bronte in 22 years.
The
Open Men's Taplin Final was an exciting finish, with the boys
taking 3rd place after a great last swim leg by Scott Thomson
who also won 4 individual Gold Medals on the day. The Open Ski
Relay was equally exciting after great paddles by Tom & Bruce,
with Stephen outrunning Maroubra for the 3rd place.
Our
Juniors had a fantastic day and took home a swag of medals and
our R&R girls went well despite the open team not competing,
taking home 2 silvers and a bronze. We must congratulate our
youngest R&R Team the under 15 ladies who in their second senior
carnival won a silver medal.
Our
surfboard riders made their first appearance for the season
and the Bronte boys dominated the open final with the twins
Anthony, winning and Sean taking a third.
The
GF's competitor of the carnival went to Tom Woodriff our elite
ski paddler, who had blinders in the Taplin Ski leg, Ski Relay,
Lifesaver Relay and led the Open Ski Final until a wave from
behind brought the rest of the field up to him at the finishing
line.

the place getters on the sand and Bruce Hopkins made the open
ski final. Mention also goes to young James Laycock who won

Coast Masters Carnival at Collaroy
Race Day - 9th January 2005

Our World Champions Gayle Dundas
& Ginnie Hedderman won their swim, Tube & Ironwoman
races and Ginnie took out the Board Race. But the stand out
performer was Greg "Teddy" Clifford who absolutely
blitzed big fields in his Board, Ski and Ironman races in an
awesome display given the big guns competing in all of his races.
Other
solid performances came from Mary Jane & Max on the Sand
and Alex on the Board and Board Relay. It was also a welcome
return to the surf for Geoff Scott who went well in the Ski,
Board, Ironman and Taplin Relay. The GF also made a cameo appearance
in the Swim & Taplin Relay but was glad we missed the final
by 1 place.

Open Women's, U19 & U17 R&R Teams have made an impressive
start to the competition season, which all goes well for the
major carnivals in Feb/March. It was good to see Bruce Hopkins
(Hoppy) competing in his first carnival. Bruce and Tom have
been competing in the Men's Health endurance Ski Race Series,
and now are training for the shorter distance races and Bruce
went well making the Ski Semi-Final.
Brett
Hooper is also returning to form and just missed the winning
wave in the Surf Race. Troy and David have just returned from
training camp in QLD with Greenmount Surf Club and showed good
form on their boards. Julia came a credible 9th in her first
Ironwoman and teamed up well with World's Team competitor Venessa
Bowden in the Board Rescue. Simon Patterson's Boat Crew had
a good Carnival after narrowly missing out on the Semifinal
after their three rows in the round robin.
Finals

Annabelle (Belt), Simone, Stephanie, Jaqui & Peta

Xmas
Scramble
|
| |
John Maguire and his cadet offsiders, David,
John, Troy and Julia had been raiding the $2 shops for the best
quality prizes.
John
set a tough swim course, but only the die hard tragics actually
swam around the whole course. It didn't really matter as everyone
participated for the fun.
Raffle
tickets were distributed to those who went in the water and
to anyone else standing around. There were some great major
prizes and we thank Richard from the Bogie Hole Cafe who kindly
donated a number of $50 breakfast vouchers.
A
big thank you to John and his crew for organising the event.....the
tradition continues.

Bronte's
point score for the championship result was 52nd out of 196
teams.
Most
of the team members (and parents) had not been to Europe and
we combined competition with visiting some of Italy's fabulous
tourist spots. We arrived in Rome and our tour organiser Trish
Ford took the team on a guide of Rome's sites, the Vatican,
St Peters Colosseo, Forum, Capitine, Pantheon, Piazza Navona,
Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps.
After
two days the team travelled to Venice by train and visited its
unique and fabulous sites including a trip to Murano Island.
The
team then headed by train to Florence and visited the Accademia
Ponte Vechio, Uffici Gallery, Boboli Gardens and Duomo. We avoided
tourist cafe's and went to traditional restaurants like La Casalinga
where we had dinner with the locals.
We
then travelled to Viareggio and camped at a small village in
Camaiore, Villa a Bianca, in the hills overlooking the Coast.
Before competition the team travelled to La Spezia and the coastal
villages of the Cinque Terre.
The
first three days of competition were in the pool at Livorno
about an hour's drive from Viareggio. A lot of the pool events
would be foreign to many of us at Bronte such as Maniquin Tows,
Rescue Medleys, Obstacle Races, Super Lifesaver, SERC and line
throwing. But now that surf life saving Australia have made
these championship events on our surf calendar, we have taken
them seriously with the benefit of our comprehensive pool training
program under the guidance of our pool event expert Tony Stanley,
Bronte were very competitive. Not surprising,
the European teams were highly skilled in pool events, but Bronte
made a number of top 10 placings in relay events particularly,
which was a superb result given they had between 150 - 200 competitors
in each event.
After
three days of pool events, we were glad to see the ocean, but
were where the waves? The conditions were reminiscent of Bronte
beach in winter with the westerlies blowing ... near to flat
- ideal for the European teams.
By
finals day, where most events had 6-8 rounds, we made it through
to finals in the Womens Taplin (Venessa, Gerri and Kim), Mens
Board Rescue (Brett Walsh and Stephen), Womens Board Rescue
(Venessa and Gerri) and individually, Christie made the Beach
Sprint final, Venessa the Womens Surf Swim final and Andrew
and Brett Hooper, the Surf Race final. Our ladies Beach Sprint
Team of Kim, Christie, Gerri and Venessa also made the finals.
Our
team were great ambassadors for Bronte and it was a pleasure
to be involved with them.
Special
mention goes to Gayle Dundas and Ginnie Hedderman, who between
them won ? medals in the masters competition, with Gayle also
competing with the Bronte Team in open competition.
A
big thanks goes to our team management headed up by tour organiser,
Trish Ford and assisted by Jo Walsh and the team members parents.
We also thank all of the people at Bronte who supported and
sponsored the team to the world championships, and helped mak
the trip a huge success and rewarding experience for all involved.
